How to Convert Large Video Files Online

Most online converters stop at a few hundred megabytes. Here is how to convert a video of several gigabytes — up to 10 GB — in the browser, and what determines how long it takes.

1

Drop your video — up to 10 GB

2

Choose the target format

3

Download the converted video

Your privacy is our mission. Most files are converted right in your browser and never leave your device. Only large files, or formats a browser cannot process, are sent to our server over an encrypted connection — they are never stored, never shared, and deleted as soon as your download is ready.

The Quick Way

Drop the video into the converter, choose the target format and press Convert. Files up to 10 GB are accepted free. If the target can hold the same codecs (MKV → MP4, MOV → MP4), the conversion takes seconds after the upload; if it has to be re-encoded, allow up to the running time of the video.

What Takes the Time

StepDepends onTypical
UploadYour connection's upload speed4 GB at 10 Mbit/s ≈ 55 minutes; at 100 Mbit/s ≈ 6 minutes
Conversion without re-encodingDisk speed onlySeconds to a minute or two
Conversion with re-encodingResolution and lengthMinutes for HD; up to the video's length for 4K
DownloadYour connection's download speedUsually much faster than the upload

Tips for Big Files

  • Use a wired or stable Wi-Fi connection; if it drops anyway, the upload resumes by itself.
  • Keep the tab open. You can switch to other tabs and programs.
  • Files up to 900 MB whose codecs fit the target are converted in the browser and are not uploaded at all.
  • Only the audio needed? Converting a video to MP3 or WAV is done in the browser whatever the size.
  • Make sure there is free disk space for the result — roughly the size of the source.

Which Conversions Avoid Re-encoding

A container change is fast and lossless when the codecs are allowed in the target: MKV, MOV, TS and FLV files with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio go to MP4 unchanged, and MP4 goes to MKV, MOV or TS the same way. WebM, WMV and AVI targets use different codecs, so those conversions re-encode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest video I can convert?

10 GB.

What happens if my internet drops in the middle?

The upload waits and continues when the connection returns. What was already uploaded is kept.

Will a 4K video stay 4K?

Yes. Resolution and frame rate are kept.
